Guide to Petworth
Petworth is one of the largest neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. It’s accessibility to the Metro and the inexpensive and adorable row houses provide a suitable environment for homebuyers. The neighborhood is also home to a vast amount of night life as well as a local Jazz project.
East of Georgia Avenue
Petworth is bounded by Harvard Street and Michigan Avenue to the south, Georgia Avenue to the west, North Capitol Street to the east and Kennedy Street to the north.
Brookland borders Petworth to the south, Crestwood/16th St. Heights to the west, Riggs Park/Michigan Park is to the east and Brightwood/Manor Park to the north.
Plenty of History
There are a lot of historic places to visit in Petworth. Some notable places are the Rock Creek Church Yard and Cemetery located within a natural rolling landscape at Rock Creek Church Road. This cemetery contains beautiful sculptures, mausoleums, and tombstones but a local favorite is the Adams Memorial grave maker located in Section E of the Cemetery. Along with the Cemetery itself, this shrouded figure is also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a great place to relax and meditate.
The historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located on Rock Creek Church Road and is one of the oldest religious institutions within the boundaries of the District. This church is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for its excellent acoustics and their professional choir.
President Lincoln’s Cottage is a national monument that also sits within the neighborhood of Petworth. It is now a museum located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
Buses, Trains and Automobiles
Petworth is a relatively easy neighborhood to get around in with a car. Since many residents own cars there is plenty of parking spots throughout the area. The H8, 60, 62, 63, 64, 70, and the 79 Metrobus lines all service the community as well as the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Station. This metro station sits within the southern part of the neighborhood and provides access to both the Green and Yellow lines.
Townhouses & Row Houses
The housing stock in this neighborhood consists of mostly townhouses, row houses, and single-family homes in varying conditions. There are several condos and apartment buildings as well, located within a few blocks around the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station. A notable residence is Park Place, providing over 150 apartments with great amenities and high rise ceilings. If you’re looking to step things up in your life and move towards the northwestern part of D.C. then Petworth’s attractive and affordable housing should definitely be considered.
Ample Night Life
A great place to dine within Petworth is Chez Billy, which is not only rich in taste but also rich in its location. Chez Billy is a Parisian bistro offering authentic French cuisine. Taking over the famous space once occupied by Billy Simpson’s House of Seafood and Steaks, this upscale venue produces some delectable eats such as the rockfish, chicken liver and sautéed trout.
Some other great spots to check out are Domku Bar & Cafe, an innovative Scandinavian restaurant that is slowly becoming Petworth’s new institution. Crane & Turtle, on Upshur Street, is also a delicious place to venture. This Japanese-French inspired restaurant has an emphasis on seafood with a globally renowned drink list. If you’re looking for something more easygoing, then The Looking Glass Lounge is perfect. This spot has weekend DJ performances as well as open-mic and quiz nights.
A great thing about living in Petworth is the amount of community events held year round. The Petworth Community Market is a weekly Saturday farmer’s market. It’s held along 9th Street between Upshur and Taylor Street and features produce, local vendors, and prepared foods. On the first Saturday of every month they also have live music. The Upshur Street Arts and Crafts Fair is another notable event in the month of December where local businesses come to offer great deals while sometimes running charity events.
The Petworth Jazz Project is a free music series of jazz performances held at the Petworth Recreation Center off of Georgia Avenue. The Recreation Center is also a great site as it has spray parks, two playgrounds, basketball courts and a small field for kite flying. Besides the annual Summer Jazz concerts on their lawn, they also supply a pickup game of soccer.
The previously mentioned Armed Forces Retirement Home is also located within the jurisdiction, just south of Rock Creek Church Yard and Cemetery. South of the AFRH is MedStar Washington Hospital Center and the Children’s National Medical Center.
Some notable schools around the area are Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School and Powell Elementary School.
Overall Petworth is a growing commercial corridor with an engaging community. This Metro-accessible neighborhood should be on the top of anyone’s list that is looking to move into the northwestern part of the District. It provides a vibrant nightlife while also being populated with attractive and affordable houses.

Twisted Horn- New Restaurant on Upshur!
I have been living in Petworth since 2007 and this is my new neighborhood favorite! Upshur St NW is becoming DC's newest restaurant row and this one doesn't disappoint. It's owned by the same folks that run Hank's Oyster Bar in Dupont.
This neighborhood library was newly renovated in 2011 but maintains its old-school charm. Check out the new terrazzo tile floor map in the lobby. The staff is friendly and the building is bright and airy. Lots of events here for children, teens, and adults too--including a beginner Yoga class on Saturdays.
When I need that really cool gift, I head over to Willow at 8th and Upshur. My favorite find was a baby R2D2 onesie in store in time for the release of Star Wars. Little Brian looked adorable wearing it. There are lots of cool fashion designs for both women and men. Willow also has pretty neat DC based novelties for your visitors who want unique souvenirs to take home.
This boutique is awesome! It has unique clothes, DC centric gifts and cool jewelry. Located on Upshur St it's the perfect shop to stop by while grabbing lunch or dinner a one of Upshur's amazing restaurants.
